Hi!

Leaf and piece of old barkLeaves and younger branches, may have been pruned some years ago

I think this evergreen (?) tree with large, Deltoid (?) leaves with clear veins on the top is exotic to South Africa; Perhaps some Birch? It has a white bark with dark horizontal marks on younger branches, the old trunks are very rough. Branches seem to die and drop from time to time. Tree is roundish and ~ 12m broad by 15m high. I've seen about 20 of them planted around here, though none of them were planted recently.

Looks might be a type of Popular.

Populus something?

I'm guessing though.

In our new site we'll have a section dedicated specifically to identifying plants. It'll be live in a few weeks.

Cheers, Alan

Thanks for the tip Alan! Yes, I think it is a hybrid poplar, Populus x canadensis, which is already listed here

http://www.plantdatabase.co.za/Populus_x_canadensis_Robusta_Erecta

but it looks a bit different since a number of different hybrids exist which all fall under the same name:

http://www.pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Populus+x+canadensis: "A group of naturally occurring hybrids between P. nigra and P. deltoidea"
